This place is not like Kampala- just saying! There are some similarities like both cities have buildings, people and roads(wait,I'm not sure about this one!)
| Snoopy- he'd followed me into our room :-) |
Surprisingly, I even miss seeing familiar faces even when the people aren't my friends. Having people to greet. Knowing that anywhere I could bump into someone I know. For example; when I'd walk into Javas to meet someone who was late, I'd walk in while looking around. Not looking for the person I was meeting but for other people I may know. Every single time, I have seen someone I know. Here, I just look around for an empty table!
I miss the familiar. Getting in a car or taxi and knowing where I am, the streets I am passing by and when to get out. Now..I need GPS and even have to be reminded that we have used a street before(when it feels like this is my very first time!). Someone after a Bible study offered me a ride home. I had no idea how to get home- didn't know how to direct them! I know what our home looks like but how to get there???!!!! Eh!! Tight number!
You will not believe it but I even miss beans- I guess it may not be the actual beans themselves! Its having the option. Having the options of ground nuts, fresh peas, MATOOKE,maize, cassava, pumpkin, bumonde and lumonde- sold in Uganda shillings. Some of those things are available here(in italics) but they are sold in dollars! And the taste is not the same. How can I forget dried fish in gnuts, fresh tilapia/nile perch!!!(don't know the difference! Munange, here, there is sea food. I like oysters naye the rest- I am still a 'munakyalo'.
There are so many black people in Kampala!(who knew!!! :-)) I didn't even think I was black- I always thought of myself more like being yellow-brown. Anyway, I miss not feeling 'different'. I don't always feel it..just sometimes when talking to some people or hanging in some places.
I think the '...fumbira' part of you can explain the part of missing ibishimbo :)
